Uninterrupted internet access

eero Internet Backup ensures uninterrupted internet access by automatically switching to a backup connection when your primary internet fails. Once an outage occurs, the nearest eero device will extend the backup connection across your devices, ensuring you don’t lose connectivity, whether you’re streaming your favorite shows, gaming online, working or studying.

Increased reliability

eero Internet Backup constantly monitors your WiFi’s connection quality and detects when a disruption occurs, protecting your home network against outages. It maintains a stable connection even during challenging weather events, supporting essential devices such as security systems and smart home appliances. You can also set up multiple backup sources, providing various failover options.

The feature recognizes when an outage is over and instantly switches back to your original internet connection.

How eero Internet Backup works

Network connection

eero Internet Backup integrates with your home’s mesh WiFi network and leverages your eero router setup to monitor the network’s status and available backup internet sources. This integration ensures that your home internet remains the primary point for all devices while the backup system prepares to take over in case of outages.

Automatic switching to a backup connection

Once the backup system detects an internet outage, it automatically switches to the mobile hotspot or secondary WiFi connection designated as the backup. It detects connection issues through continuous real-time monitoring and immediately makes the switch. Once your ISP restores your primary connection, it instantly switches back, ensuring you remain online.

Real-time monitoring and threat management

The backup system monitors your network’s real-time status and detects internet disruptions. It instantly switches to the backup connections to protect you from outages.

As a feature of eero Plus, your home network also has access to advanced security features, including VPN protection, password management with 1Password, malware protection with Malwarebytes and dynamic DNS, ensuring enhanced online security.

Automatic backup

The system allows you to configure up to eight wireless connections as backup sources, creating reliable fallback options that activate instantly when your primary connection fails.

Multi-device support

eero Internet Backup uses the mesh WiFi network to manage connections and extend connectivity to all your devices simultaneously, from personal devices to smart home appliances.

Real-time backup

The eero Internet Backup system provides real-time backup with immediate internet outage detection and automatic switching capabilities, ensuring continuous connectivity without disruptions or delays.

Features of eero Internet Backup

The key features of eero Internet Backup that allow it to provide internet backup when you need it include:

Multiple backup options

The internet backup system supports multiple backup options, providing a safety net for your home network. It operates wirelessly, requiring no additional cables or physical connections to connect to the alternative sources.

Device prioritization

With eero Internet Backup, you can manage device access by prioritizing those maintaining internet access during backup, such as workstations, smart home devices and security systems. The prioritization capability lets you configure the essential devices to receive internet access and helps manage network resources by deprioritizing idle and bandwidth-heavy devices.

Easy setup and management

Setting up eero Internet Backup is straightforward using the eero app on your mobile phone. You can customize backup options and manage which devices will access the backup networks. The system’s design allows it to automatically transition between your primary connection and backup networks without any manual involvement.

Troubleshooting tips

Consider the following tips if you encounter any of the these issues during setup:

Compatibility issues

Before you set up eero Internet Backup, ensure that:

    • Your mobile device has an up-to-date eero app.
    • The eero router’s firmware is up-to-date.
    • You have an eero Plus subscription, which includes the eero Internet Backup feature.
    • The eero mesh network is running on compatible devices, including eero 6, eero Pro, eero 6+, eero Pro 6, eero Pro 6E, eero PoE 6, eero Max 7, eero Outdoor 7, Ring Alarm Pro and eero Beacon.

Network discovery problems

If your eero app does not detect your backup network:

    • Ensure your mobile hotspot or nearby WiFi connections are active and within range.
    • If you use your mobile hotspot, restart your phone or reboot the backup WiFi router to refresh the connection.
    • If automatic network discovery fails, manually enter the backup network’s details into the app.

Signal strength optimization

While eero routers support speeds up to 9.4 Gbps, your backup connection’s performance ultimately determines signal strength, speed and reliability. Mobile hotspots and cellular backups often have lower speeds, bandwidth and higher latency compared to a secondary WiFi network, which can impact high-bandwidth activities like 4K streaming and competitive gaming.

Optimize the performance of your backup connection:

    • Position your eero devices within range of your backup connection.
    • Check signal strength indicators when choosing backup networks.
    • Consider connecting a high-speed secondary WiFi connection as backup instead of a mobile hotspot.
    • If using a mobile hotspot, ensure your mobile device has adequate cellular coverage within your location.
    • Disable access to high-bandwidth devices and idle devices.
