What equipment is needed for fiber internet in Luzerne County?
Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.1 modems allow for much higher speed than previous modems. DOCSIS 3.1 modems offer the best in speed and massive improvements in reliability.
Make sure you have a Gigabit WiFi router, which uses the protocol called 802.11ac (and can support speeds up 1500 Mbps). We recommend using our best in class router for Gig internet (up to 1500 Mbps*) which is capable of supporting these high speeds. Our Whole Home WiFi, powered by eero delivers excellent WiFi coverage in your home (available for an additional monthly fee). However, if you’re in love with your current router, it will work, but we cannot guarantee Gig internet will work with your current router.
How does Gigabit internet work?
Gigabit service can be transmitted over traditional cable wiring or fiber connection running to your house. Gigabit internet, which uses the DOCSIS 3.1 standard, can download data up to 1 Gbps, and upload data at 20 Mbps. Gigabit internet service transmits data up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) — or 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps). If you or your family loves to stream movies and TV while playing bandwidth-hungry games and downloading the latest apps on your smartphone — all at the same time — Gigabit service could provide a major improvement in network speed and reliability.
Will I get 1 full Gigabit delivered to my home?
If you have Gigabit service (1,000Mbps),Gigabit is being delivered to your home. However, your modem has a Gigabit port and a small amount of bandwidth is used to connect you to the internet. Gigabit speeds are up to 1500 Mbps because a small amount of bandwidth is used to make sure data is transmitted properly. This is expected and normal for residential gig service.
When do I need Gig internet?
The internet speed you need depends on your home’s connectivity and the devices you use. Using your internet connection for things like Netflix streaming, gaming, or to support a myriad of the best smart home devices, faster internet connections with more data may be right for your home. Higher speeds provide better performance for homes with many connected devices, streaming, video conferencing, gaming and multiple smart devices.
